A friend of mine has an old cap and ball rifle from the Civil War era. The only marking we can find on it is a star in a circle. Can anyone tell us anything about this gun? I have pictures available of the gun and the mark.

I'm more knowledgable about revolvers than rifles. During the Civil War, Starr Arms supplied the Army & Navy revolvers, however, they were so marked on the frame or lock. It could be a possibility that they marked cap & ball rifles with the star in a circle, but I have my doubts. If it had been a pistol, I would have recommended removing the grip to look for serial #s and/or manufacturer's mark.

Echeverria is the only company that I am aware of that used this mark, but they did not start production until 1908.

There are several gun & military newsgroups that may be able to help you.
