Can somebody give me pointers on how to identify Bakelite? I have a chess set that I am almost sure is Bakelite based on comparing it to another set and a Backgammon set that is questionable. Any advice or places to look would be appreciated. Thanks,

I believe if you immerse a piece in hot water then take it out and smell, bakelite gives off a certain characteristic odor and plastic will not...

A little '409' on a white cloth-rub the item gently and if you get a yellow/ greeny stain you've got baklite. I like this test because my nose doesn't work and sometimes hot water will change the color of old plastic.
