I'm not sure what type of authentication you are looking for. With the address being on a label, it would generally be that of the photographer/studio, rather than the subject. It may be more productive to research the subject of the photo if this is not a portrait photo (which are ten for a dollar lately).

I'd first start with a search engine like google.com, making an entry like this:

+'address' +'name of city' +'name of state'

If anything interesting happened at that address, it's generally noted on some sort of web page. You can clip out the address number if you want more information on the area, and perhaps locate a business name that way (ie, 'John established his studio on Main Street in Anytown, Your State, USA in 1912'.

Yes, but you said you had a *possible* state due to where it was purchased.

Then you have more info than you originally stated.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I forgot that only 1990 and up information can be found on the internet. My bad.

All those times I figured stuff out like this, I must have been dreaming.

Must be. When I was on the DoD internet in the early 1980s, it sure was a long wait until the info because available in 1990 Boring too, sitting there staring at that little black and white screen. 'I wish someone would put information in this box!'

Now, if someone would start putting that 1989 information online, maybe someone would volunteer to do 1988?

It sounds to me like you are playing a game of 'yes, but.' In other words you are giving a reason for not doing what ever is suggested. However: I am not the most computer savy person in this newsgroup but if I were looking for this info I would try each state. You have the city name

The answer is simple, look in an American atlas :~)) then;

1. Do a search on the cities with the same name 2. Contact the local historical society, city hall etc. They are happy to be of service.

There is a online atlas here with full search functions http://www.nationalatlas.gov/faq.html

Job done
